As a matter of simple justice, something seems fundamentally wrong with a democratic system that has a majority of women among its voters but leaves women so dramatically underrepresented among its elected political leaders.

Susan J. Carroll and Richard L. Fox, “Gender and Elections: Shaping the Future of American Politics” (via commedesenfants)

This doesn’t make much sense to me. If women comprise the majority of voters, then aren’t they part of the reason not as many women are elected to be leaders? Isn’t the responsibility on women to pursue a career in politics? I feel strange placing blame on the “system” for the lack of women in politics, and I am uncomfortable about what is implied in this quote - that women voters should be electing women representatives in order to fix the “fundamentally wrong” system we have now, and not voting purely based on who is a better candidate.
